Pierce County households have dogs, mud, kids and basements, and vinyl plank is the floor that handles all four. Rigid-core LVP has become the default for kitchens, entries, laundry rooms, finished basements, rentals and increasingly whole houses, because it looks enough like wood, cleans up after anything and does not care about water.
Where it makes sense
Kitchens, baths and laundry rooms, for the obvious reason. Entries and mudrooms. Finished basements and daylight lower levels in Lakewood, University Place and the North End, floated over a vapor barrier on the slab. Rentals in Tacoma, Lakewood, Parkland and Spanaway, where durability and plank-by-plank repair pay for themselves. Any house with a large dog. Whole-house installs for a seamless look with no transitions between wet and dry rooms.
Choosing a product
SPC or WPC core; a 20-mil wear layer as the standard; an attached pad for sound, or an added underlayment in condos and upstairs units; plank size to suit the house. Look for embossed-in-register texture, matte finish, enough pattern variety that repeats are not obvious, and painted bevels. Bring samples home and look at them in your light.
Flat subfloors
Vinyl plank is thinner than laminate and shows every ridge and dip within months. Installers grind high spots, fill low spots and fill tile grout lines before installing; in older houses with plank subfloors, an underlayment plywood layer is sometimes the right call and is priced at the measure.
Floating or glue-down
Most homes get a click-lock floating install with the manufacturer's expansion gaps. Large open areas, heavy fixed furniture and some rental settings get glue-down for a quieter, more permanent floor.
Transitions, trim and appliances
T-moldings or flush transitions at doorways, reducers and thresholds at exterior doors, matching nosings on stairs, baseboards reset or quarter round added, and appliances pulled and reset with a check that the dishwasher still fits under the counter.
On the quote
